Who We Are

Genesee County United Way is a staple of our community. Almost a century of success demonstrates a strong dedication to our agencies and the people in our community.  The purpose of United Way is to give back to our community, advocate for our local agencies, and receive funding to help support the non-profit sector.   In an ideal world United Way would bring in enough donations that the 14 agencies we support would not have to worry about fundraising. They could focus solely on the amazing work they do to make our community a better place for all of us to live. Unfortunately in these tough economic times as our wallets shrink and we are able to give less the need for services for many individuals increases. More people are out of work, depressed, and in need of financial and emotional support.   One of the great things about giving through United Way is that your money stays right here in your community, it doesn’t go to another nation, or state, or city for that matter. So your dollars, in turn, may very well help you or someone you love at some time in your life.  Have your ever watched a cub scout's eyes glisten with excitement during his first pinewood derby, the anxious thrill of a girl scout after selling her first box of cookies, the desperation of a mother that cannot afford to feed her baby, the frustration of a grandfather that can’t decide between food or medicine, or the sadness of a family that does not have heat for their family in the cold winter months. Thousands of Genesee County individuals and families in situations just like these receive help every year from agencies that receive United Way funding. Many people feel as though their donation can’t make much of a difference, but it does, for example;

$1 per week provides

Three hours of counseling for an at risk youth

Groceries for a week for a person in need

Two youth the opportunity to participate in sports

$5 per week provides

A night in a safe house for a family that is a victim of domestic violence

Two children the opportunity to participate in an after school program for a month

An individual receiving hospice care with an in-home bed and other medical equipment for one month

$10 per week provides

Prescriptions for four people who otherwise cannot afford their medication

Provides a summer camp experience in a safe nurturing environment for two children

Heat for three families during the coldest months of the year

Help United Way keep Genesee County healthy by ensuring our agencies can continue to provide the much needed services that they offer.
